Small actions around your home can make a big difference for birds, insects, and local plants. Here are five easy ways to get started.

You don’t need a big yard or special tools to help nature. Small actions around your home can make a big difference for birds, insects, and local plants. Here are five easy ways to get started.

1. Add Bird‑Friendly Window Stickers

Bird collisions with windows are a leading cause of bird deaths in Canada. Many birds can’t see glass, but by placing special stickers or decals on the outside of your windows, you help birds spot the glass and stay safe. They come in lots of patterns and are easy to apply. They can be purchased online through suppliers such as Feather Friendly or at local stores such as Wild Birds Unlimited.  Check out other ideas for supporting birds in our Bird-Friendly Yard Guide

2. Use Dark‑Sky Friendly Outdoor Lights

Bright outdoor lights can confuse birds, insects, and even your neighbours. Choose lights that point downward and aren’t too bright. This helps protect wildlife and lets everyone enjoy the night sky. Dark sky compliant lights that reduce glare and skyglow can be found at many lighting stores and home centres. Learn more about light pollution on Dark Sky International.

3. Plant Native Plants

Support biodiversity by planting native plants in your yard, which are species that grow naturally in the Saskatoon region. They need less water, support local insects, and give birds food and shelter. Even a small patch of native flowers can become a mini‑habitat. Learn more about how to create a natural garden by viewing Saskatoon’s Natural Garden Guidelines and Healthy Yards resources, or reaching out to the Saskatchewan Native Plant Society.

4. Give Your Boulevard Tree a Drink

Trees along the street need care too. During hot, dry weather, give your boulevard tree a slow drink of water once a week. Healthy trees provide shade, clean air, and homes for wildlife. Don’t have a boulevard tree? See if you’re eligible through the City’s Request a Boulevard Tree program.

5. Reduce the use of Chemicals

There are many ways to create healthy, beautiful outdoor spaces without using pesticides. Protect yourself, family, pets, and wildlife by using chemical free yard care approaches. View our Pesticide-Free Gardening: How-To Guide to learn how.

Supporting nature doesn’t have to be complicated. With a few simple steps, your home can become a welcoming place for local wildlife and a healthier part of your neighbourhood.
